Nursing professionals are advised to familiarise themselves with the correct operation of the slide transfer sheet to ensure the safety of nursing staff when transferring patients.
The ease, safety and comfort of the slide transfer sheet is essential for transferring patients, not only for basic transfers, but also for ease of use. It is important that the transfer process is easier, safer and more comfortable for both the caregiver and the patient.
Turn the patient safely onto his or her side.
Place the slide transfer sheet together. Lay flat on the bed, parallel to the sheet.
Insert the slide sheet under one side of the patient and repeat on the other side.
Gently push or pull the patient. The top slide sheet slides against the bottom slide sheet, creating a smooth and easy transfer for the patient and caregiver.
After these steps the patient can be easily moved from left to right, back and forth.
The distance the patient needs to be transferred and the size of the slide transfer sheet determine whether the slide transfer sheet is to be used folded or laid flat during use.
At all times, at least two caregivers must work together to transfer a patient using a slide transfer sheet. When the patient is to be transferred sideways, the open folded sheet is placed towards the patient and underneath the patient at least from the hip to the shoulder and finally pulled from the open end.
Note: The slide transfer sheet is slippery, so the patient should be transferred slowly to ensure that the patient's head does not hit the top of the bed or other areas where the patient can be easily hurt.

Before using any slide transfer sheet, it is important to check that it is in good condition and that there are no signs of wear, tear or damage. Prolonged use can cause degradation of the fabric, thread, and stitches. We also need to check if the slide transfer sheet is not sliding, especially the washable slide transfer sheets, as they may start to lose their sliding properties after several washes. This can affect the handling of the transfer patient and may even cause some danger. Therefore, for safety reasons, it is important to make sure that the slide transfer sheet works properly when using a slide transfer sheet that is used repeatedly. We can test the slide transfer sheet by placing it on a bed or surface and placing items of similar weight of the patient to ensure that the two layers slide smoothly against each other.

Before using any slide transfer sheet, it is important to follow the advice of a professional and carry out a risk assessment to ensure that the slide transfer sheet is safe for normal operation. The slip transfer sheet can be checked for slipperiness by simulating the transfer of a patient.
The single patient use slide transfer sheets are reusable but should be discarded when they are no longer needed by the patient or when they have been used for a long time and are no longer usable. There is no need to clean these slide transfer sheets.
If such slide transfer sheets are slightly soiled, small marks and spills can be wiped off with a damp cloth and dried. They can also be cleaned with a dilute chlorine-based solution or a good quality sterilizing solution. Then the slide sheet can be used again by the patient.
The washable, reusable slide transfer sheet is designed to be washed and can be reused by different people.
The reusable slide transfer sheet can be washed in accordance with standard hospital laundry guidelines and infection control guidelines. However, they should not be washed with bleach.
The recommended maximum wash temperature is 90°C.
Drip dry, use low temperature tumble drying if necessary. Tumble dried sheets may have a slight wrinkled appearance but will not affect performance.
Lightly soiled sheets can be wiped clean using a diluted chlorine-based solution or a good quality disinfectant. If required, small marks and spills can be wiped up with a damp cloth and then dried.
To avoid potential cross-contamination, slide transfer sheets should be washed before being used with different patients or residents.
