Yankees welcome Luke Voit back as they open a three-game series tonight in St. Petersburg, Florida against the Tampa Bay Rays. The divisional rivals will be staging a battle for second place in the American League East, as both teams enter tonight’s action three games behind the Boston Red Sox. The Rays enter the game 14th in the American League in SLG, eighth in OBP, and they managed only eight runs in its recent three-game weekend series with Oakland. Montgomery looks to improve on his previous performances against Tampa earlier this season in which he gave up 4 long balls over 11 combined innings in 2 starts.The Yankees lineup will be facing Luis Patiño, a 21-year-old right-hander who’s making his second start of the season. Patiño is coming off a great appearance one week ago tonight in which he appeared in relief and threw three innings against the Angels, striking out five, walking none, while allowing only two hits. The Yankees look to get the bats going again, as despite winning 9 of their last 12 games, they’ve only managed to score 15 runs in their last 4. In addition to Voit, Gio Urshela is back in the lineup as well to help the Yankees get things rolling again. On the downside, Aaron Hicks was originally penciled in but has been scratched, as he’s still sore from a right shin bruise from a painful foul in Sunday’s game.
